Despite some educational benefits, toddlers’ use of gadgets should be strictly limited due to its harmful effects on their social and cognitive growth. Cognitive development is one key area where gadget exposure has a significant impact. Some studies suggest that educational apps can enhance toddlers’ memory, problem-solving skills, and literacy. For example, research by Hirsh-Pasek et al. (2015) found that interactive media can help foster language skills and basic cognitive abilities, but only when used sparingly and under adult supervision. In contrast, too much screen time can hinder brain development.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (2020), toddlers who spend excessive time on devices may struggle to focus and retain information. This is because developing brains need real-world interaction to grow properly. Thus, while technology can be educational, it should never replace face-to-face engagement and physical activity, which are essential for healthy brain development.

Furthermore, overexposure to gadgets also negatively affects toddlers’ social development. Social skills in early childhood are primarily built through direct interactions with peers, caregivers, and the environment. However, toddlers who spend large amounts of time with screens may lose interest in social engagement. A study by Radesky et al. (2016) reported that excessive screen time is linked to reduced parent-child communication and fewer opportunities for children to develop empathy and emotional understanding.

Moreover, toddlers constantly surrounded by technology may struggle with basic social skills such as eye contact, sharing, and expressing emotions verbally. These skills are vital not only for future relationships but also for academic success. Therefore, parents must support their toddlers’ social development by balancing screen exposure with active play and meaningful family interaction.

In conclusion, although technology can support learning, excessive gadget use can hinder toddlers’ social and cognitive development. By limiting screen time and encouraging more face-to-face interactions, parents can help ensure a healthier developmental path for their children.
